One of the most recognisable faces in Australia fitness has revealed her most beloved and most hated fitness trends from over the years.

Kayla Itsines has been a prominent face in the fitness world since 2008, and is the co-founder and head trainer of Sweat.

Being in the industry for a significant period of time, Kayla has seen trends come and go, with some of her favourites being body positivity, the Mediterranean diet and bio-hacking tools such as ice baths and infrared saunas.

But, there are some trends that she wishes would disappear.

“Some of the obvious trends that I absolutely hated over the years were diets that cut out things such as cutting out gluten,” Kayla told news.com.au.

“I remember vividly four years ago, I was in New York and it was all about cutting out gluten from your from your diet. I was so confused and one of the questions I was asked was ‘what do you cut out?’ I was like, nothing’. I eat a healthy, balanced diet.”

She said the only thing she tends to avoid is dairy, as she has an intolerance to that.

Another thing that Kayla hates is being called a fitness “influencer” as she is a personal trainer.

“I think the industry is so flooded right now. I think influencers are absolutely amazing,” she said.

“They work with brands and they talk about products that they love and work outs that they do but they’re not personal trainers. I think it’s important to separate that.”

Not only have fitness events changed, but so has how Kayla tackles fitness since becoming a mother.

She said now it’s about “getting” to work out rather than “having to” because she has so many more responsibilities now, adding that she values that time so much more.

It’s been four years since Kayla had her last live event, but now she is back in a big way.

Four years ago, Kayla had her bags packed and was ready to head to London to host a live fitness event, when the news came through that all there were no flights to or from Australia because of Covid.

“We have this program called Zero equipment, which had been in the making for a year and a half,” Kayla told news.com.au.

”We’d loaded it into the app for when we were ready to launch it. We pushed it forward because we were like ‘oh my god, people are going to need home workouts’.”

Following lockdowns and flight cancellations, Kayla fell pregnant with her son Jax, so now is the first chance since to hold a live event.

Kayla said people can expect an “OG Kayla” event on September 19 at the Sydney ICC, which can fit up to 2000 people.

The work out with feature some high intensity training that people have come to expect from the 32-year-old.

Kayla’s live is a free pre-event for the FitHer Expo, running on October 7 and 8, which is a fitness event for women and by women. Other fitness stars such as Steph Clare Smith and Laura Henshaw will also be in attendance at the larger event.
