One name in particular has proved to be the most popular for the ninth time in 10 years.

Isla has been crowned the number one baby name for girls — while Oliver proved to be the most popular for boys for the ninth time in 10 years.

The top baby names for boys and girls have been announced after the NSW Government analysed the monikers and trends of every child born across the state in 2023.

According to the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Isla moved up from third spot in 2022 to claim the state’s title for the first time — knocking out fan favourites Charlotte, Olivia and Amelia.

Last year’s winner, Charlotte, fell four positions to fifth while Bella and Addison had the biggest drop overall, falling from positions 69th and 71st to 96th and 97th respectively, clinging on to their top 100 status.

Amelia came close behind in second spot, followed by Olivia, Ava, Lily and Evelyn.

Sophia and Matilda rounded out the top 10 — both tied in ninth spot.

Frontrunner Oliver reclaimed the boy’s throne by just 18 more registered births after having lost the top spot to Noah last year.

Noah slipped down to second place, with Leo landing on the third spot.

Henry came close behind in fourth place, followed by Luca, Theodore, Hudson, William, Lucas and Charlie.

Meanwhile, 10 new names made an appearance in the top 100 for the girls — with Amara, Maisie, Margot, Lucia, Lottie, Cleo, Kaia, Callie, Kiara and Zahra all joining the list.

While the boys saw eight new monikers — with Miles, Isaiah, Darcy, Tommy, Spencer, Parker, Mateo and Marcus.

The girl names that have fallen out of fashion in 2023 include Riley, Gabriella, Harlow, Claire, Anastasia, Leah, Charlie, Elodie, Jasmine and Quinn.

Boy names falling out of the top 100 include Christian, Nicholas, Hamish, Vincent, Connor, Ashton, Dylan and Julian.

“Whether you choose an old classic or a new trendsetter, registering a name is easy and must be done within 60 days of the child being born,” NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages spokeswoman Theresa Fairman said.

“Finding the right name to give to your baby can challenging but we hope our list of popular names helps you find the one that’s just right for you.”

“After registration parents can check out the growing range of commemorative birth certificates which can be purchased at any time, for people of any age born or adopted in NSW.”

As of April 30 2024, there have been 85,819 registered births for babies born in NSW in the 2023 calendar year.
