A young mum who enlisted the help of a professional cleaner to tidy up her home has been left flustered after she ended up having to fork out five times more than what she was quoted.

Indy Clinton, from Sydney, juggles two young kids, so she contacted a domestic cleaner in her area via text to get a price for a regular house clean – with plans to have her come around weekly.

“I have some availability on Monday, I charge $55/hr and provide all equipment and products,” the cleaner said to Indy via a text message.

“I have some availability on Monday, I charge $55/hr and provide all equipment and products,” the cleaner said to Indy via a text message.

The family home would only take around two hours to clean so the 26-year-old pregnant mum – who’s expecting a third child – thought the service would cost her about $110.

“I thought, that’s great… I will pay that,” Indy said.

The night before the cleaner was expected to arrive at her home, Indy received an unusual text.

“She messaged me, and she’s like, ‘We will be there at 10am’,” she explained.

“We? She had just told me, ‘I’m $55 an hour, and I bring all of the products and the vacuum’. And I was like, ‘Great’. But when she said, ‘We’… I was like, ‘We?’ What does ‘we’ mean?”

Shortly before the cleaner arrived, she sent Indy another text saying “By the way, I’m bringing three of my girls”.

She was stunned when the cleaner rocked up at her doorstep, along with three other girls.

At first, Indy thought she would just be charged a standard $55 per hour with four cleaners doing the job at the same time.

But she was wrong.

“It’s the end of the clean. They took two-and-a-half hours. She comes out and she’s doing the maths in her head,” Indy recalled.

“‘Okay, so that’s $55 an hour, there’s four of us, we’re here. So that’s around seven-and-a-half, eight hours. $55 an hour’.

“I was like, sorry, what? $55 an hour per person? But you didn’t tell me there was all these other people coming?

“I died. I pretty much passed out, I vomited in my throat.”

Indy was stunned when she ended up having to pay $500 for a general clean of her home.

Despite her disbelief, the mum couldn’t pluck up the courage to confront the cleaner.

“I looked at her and smiled and said, ’No worries. That’s sweet. I’ll transfer now. See you next week’,” Indy said.

“But I don’t want to see her next week. How can she say she’s $55 an hour, brings all her own stuff, and she just slides in there with three other girls with her?

“You can’t just slide that in babe.”

She added: “Should she have told me that I am pretty much chopping off a limb to have a clean house? Since when did ‘I’ mean four people? Am I the confused one?”

Indy turned to social media for advice as the experience left her “stressing”.

Her video has been viewed more than 1.4 million times — with many professional cleaners suggesting she was “ripped off” because she was basically charged $220 per hour – not $55 as quoted.

“I have my own cleaning business, we charge $25 an hour, everything included. We charge $400 for a BOND CLEAN,” one said.

Another shared: “No! I’m $40 an hour and I bring everything to my jobs. If I have a two-hour job, I bring an extra person — it’s only one hour so same price!”

Meanwhile, many were outraged on Indy’s behalf.

“Nope, it doesn’t work like that. She said $55 an hour, not $55 an hour for four cleaners — nope nope nope,” one said.

Another shared: “No that’s so unprofessional of her.”

One suggested: “That’s ridiculous!”

While others said they knew how she was feeling about having to tell the cleaner she could no longer work at her home.

“I could never break up with a cleaner because I am the same! Blame it on the hubby always! ‘Sorry my husband has said yes to a family friend to clean’,” one suggested.

Another revealed: “OMG this is literally me, not being able to say something.”

While one added: “I would’ve passed out as soon as she told me the total. No way in hell would I be seeing her again next week.”
