Lucas Herbert could be set to join Cameron Smith’s LIV golf team.
Lucas Herbert is reportedly on the verge of defecting to LIV golf to join Cam Smith’s all-Aussie Ripper GC outfit after battling through 2023 on the US PGA Tour.
The world No.69 has been flagged as the likely replacement for Jediah Morgan, who lost his spot on the Saudi-funded tour after the installation of promotion and relegation rules for players.
A winner on both the US PGA and the DP World Tour, Herbert opened up on the mental battles he endured last year, which resulted in him taking a month off after the British Open.
Golf website “Flushing It” first reported Herbert had been locked in as the fourth and final member of Smith’s team after veteran Matt Jones signed on again for 2024.
There has as yet been no confirmation from LIV or Ripper GC but Herbert responded to an Instagram post from Flushing It announcing his signing, replying “how’s the picture”.
Herbert, 28 has 57 appearances on the PGA Tour and 92 on the DP World Tour since turning pro nine years ago.
He won the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship in 2021 and has three wins on the DP world Tour, most recently at last year’s ISPS Handa Championship in Japan.
He also achieved a career high world ranking of 40th in 2022 but struggled for much of 2023.
Herbert revealed he stepped away from the game after becoming a “bitter and spiteful person” amid growing PGA Tour pressures when he returned to playing in September last year.
He’s yet to tee it up anywhere in 2024 in either the US or Europe and a move to LIV would open the door for him to play at the Adelaide event in April.
