‘His potential doesn’t have a ceiling’: Renegades re-sign Fraser-McGurk after the best season of his career
The Melbourne Renegades have re-signed one of the world’s most exciting young batters, with Jake Fraser-McGurk inking a new four-year deal that will help them handle the loss of veteran stars Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh who both announced their retirements recently.
The 21-year-old is one of the BBL’s biggest bashers, with Fraser-McGurk smashing 257 runs from eight innings – the seventh most this season – while striking at 158.64.
It comes on the back of his world record century off just 29 balls in the Marsh Cup a few months ago, with some of the best white ball cricketers in the world convinced he is Australia’s next big thing.
“No one in Australia is better to watch than Fraser-McGurk. Easily the most talented young batter in the country. His potential doesn’t actually have a ceiling,” World Cup hero Glenn Maxwell tweeted last month.
It’s been a disastrous few years for the Renegades who have won just two games this season, but there are positive signs ahead if they can rebuild around Fraser-McGurk and Will Sutherland.
“It was an easy decision for me and to be part of the club’s future is really exciting,” Fraser-McGurk said.
“I’ve made some great mates here; I love being part of this playing group. With Finchy and Marshy now moving on, it’s a changing of the guard, and I want to keep contributing to what is a really talented young group moving forward.
“I feel I’ve taken real strides this year as a batter, the Renegades have given me an opportunity to express myself out in the middle and it’s paying off.
“Hopefully in the next couple of seasons those contributions can translate to more wins and we can have another crack at a second title.”
The Renegades will avoid the wooden spoon if they beat the Thunder on Wednesday night, with Fraser-McGurk set to provide the fireworks in western Sydney.
“Jake has so much talent and we have all enjoyed watching him harness that in BBL13. All of us at the Renegades, including our members and fans, are looking forward to seeing more,” Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said.
“He’s a great person to have at the club. He brings so much energy, in the changerooms and out in the middle. We’re delighted to have him with us to build around as we plan for the future.”
