Aussie professional organiser’s simple trick to make dirty white sneakers look new again
‘You will be blown away by the results.’
White sneakers are a style staple but also one of the most annoying items to clean.
However, Australian professional organiser Anita Birges has shared the “best cleaning hack of the year” for dirty white sneakers — making them “practically brand new”.
She shared a step-by-step tutorial in a video posted on her Instagram page, where she frequently shared domestic and organising tips and tricks.
To transform dirty shoes, Anita said you’ll need dishwashing liquid, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a toothbrush.
“You will be blown away by the results,” she said.
“I have tested and tried so many sneaker cleaning hacks over the years and this is by far the most effective one I’ve seen to date.
“It takes overall about an hour to do and you may already have these cleaning ingredients in your home.”
To make the cleaning formula, the professional organiser suggested pouring a quarter of a cup of dishwashing liquid into a small container.
Next you’re going to put half a cup of hydrogen peroxide and a quarter cup of baking soda.
“Scrape out what’s left with your toothbrush and mix it all up,” she said.
“Now you’re going to take out the laces of both shoes and you’re going to start scrubbing away. Scrub the solution all over your sneakers, inside and out, including the tongue of the sneaker.
“Be generous with the solution and dip your toothbrush in and out.”
Place the laces into what’s left of the solution.
“Leave for 45 minutes and let the solution get to work,” she said.
Anita said once the 45 minutes is up, simply pop your sneakers into a delicates laundry bag and put it in your washing machine.
Wash on a quick 30-minute cycle.
“Once your washing cycle is done, you’re going to take everything out of the delicates bag. Now this is important, do not put them in the dryer or in front of a heater,” she warned.
Anita said you need to leave the sneakers out in the sun, if possible, to dry.
“I also like to adjust the tongues as well,” she said.
The professional organiser then showed the clean sneakers, which looked “good as new”.
People were loving Anita’s video and shared their own sneaker cleaning hacks in the comments.
“Most importantly don’t use a hot wash. It will shrink your sneakers, cold or up to 30 degrees,” said one.
“I just put mine in the washing machine and that does the trick,” added another.
“I use fabric spray, works every time,” said a third.
Anita recently shared a simple trick to deep clean your couch.
“It takes about an hour to do properly and you most likely already have the items you need in your home,” she said in her Instagram video.
All you’ll need is a vacuum cleaner, a dishwashing tablet, a microfibre cloth and a pot lid.
“I have tried and tested so many cleaning hacks over the years and this is by far the most impressive one,” she said.
First off, remove all your cushions and vacuum the couch to remove loose dirt, dust and hair.
“I like to get into all the crevices, I do the top, I do the armrest and I do the whole thing,” Anita said.
Next, place a dishwashing tablet in a glass bowl, then pour over boiling water to dissolve it.
“Pop in your microfibre cloth and let it cool down,” she explained.
“Be careful, this might be hot. Once it’s cooled down, ring it out and wrap it around a pot lid.”
Using the microfibre wrapped lid, scrub the couch frame, then rinse the cloth and repeat the process.
“Lay out your cloth, wrap it around the pot lid and go for gold,” she said.
“You’re going to wipe down your couch starting from the top, work your way down to the bottom and the armrest. You’re going to be surprised and shocked at how gross this is.
“Repeat the process on your couch cushions, leave everything to dry and voila. Couch is clean.”
The founder of The Mise en Place said she was disgusted to see the water turn into a murky brown colour.
“I was shocked at what I saw come out of my couch,” she said.
“I like to give it a really good clean once a year but jeez, this was crazy.”
